Less Than a Month Left to Enter Local Media Works Awards

Media planners and creatives have just under a month left to enter the Local Media Works Awards for the chance to win the awards prize of two flights to New York.

The awards challenge media planners to come up with a campaign for Virgin Atlantic with local and regional media at its heart that sensitively encourages local communities to appreciate the unique brand values of Virgin Atlantic.

A judging panel chaired by  former Starcom Mediavest Group UK chief executive Stewart Easterbrook will assess entries from across the media industry for the awards which are organised by Local Media Works.

The awards cover five categories; best original thinking, best strategy, best use of content, best use of local targeting, best use of multi-platform, and a new creative category for creative agencies which will be judged by Adam&Eve founder, James Murphy.

In a piece for Local Media Works last week, James wrote about the power of local news media to enable national brands to connect with local communities.

James wrote: "By tapping into regional insights, an advertiser can position itself as an ally to people in a particular geography, reflecting and articulating local concerns, aspirations or humour. And when brands get this right it can be immensely effective.

"Local media, local newspapers in print and digital, is a natural platform for this kind of activity. The industry combines the sheer scale of 40 million readers each week with a deep rooted connection with local community, based on a shared investment in local issues.

"Local papers campaign on things that matter to their readers - whether it’s keeping the local hospital open, raising funds for a school, or exposing town hall waste - with real, tangible results. No other media can match this unique, highly trusted, and participatory relationship with its audience."

Entries close on 9 September at 5pm and winners will be announced at the awards celebration party on 19 October at The Hospital Club in the heart of London.
